Frequently Asked Questions

Should couples split expenses 50/50 or proportionally?

Proportional is usually more fair. If one partner earns 60% of the household income, they cover 60% of shared costs. That way both of you end up with similar spending power relative to what you earn.

How much should individual allowances be?

A good starting point is 5-10% of each person's take-home pay. What matters most is that you both agree on the number and neither person judges how the other spends theirs.

How do we handle debt that one partner brought into the relationship?

Totally up to you. Some couples share all debt, others keep it separate. A popular middle ground: minimum payments come from shared funds, but extra payments come from the individual allowance of the person who holds the debt.
