Proportional splitting based on income is generally more equitable. If one partner earns 60% of household income, they cover 60% of shared expenses. This leaves both partners with similar discretionary income relative to their earnings.
A common guideline is 5-10% of each person's take-home pay. The key is that both partners agree on the amount and there is no judgment about how allowance money is spent.
This is personal — some couples treat all debt as shared, others keep it separate. A common middle ground is that the person with the debt makes minimum payments from shared funds but accelerated payments from their individual allowance.
